There are a few places in the world that seem to demand that you just let yourself go, unbend and soar with the wind. Relax in the comfort of nature. Beautiful Edge of the World is one of these places. Tickle the eyes, spark the imagination, remember what nature and being is all about. After spending time at A Beautiful Edge of the World, you'll feel you've discovered one of the truly special spots on Earth.
Edge of the World
As the name implies, this is the edge of the world. You can view down into Kealakekua Bay where James Cook met his demise in the late 1700's and easily imagine his awe of this island and the natives' awe of him and his ship. A wander through the Place of Refuge will send you back in time. Five acres offers the quietude one should expect in such a beautiful setting. Tropical fruit trees are there for your picking, and macadamia nut trees and coffee plants are there for my picking, birds,and beautiful sunsets into the Pacific Ocean. Great for both the young and young at heart who really want to get away.
South Kona is known for its rural flavor. People who live here call it the REAL Hawaii - as opposed to the hustle and bustle of Waikiki or the resorts to the north. Be sure to let me know your special interests (whale watching, kayaking, volcano watching, scuba, etc.) so that I can help you build them into your stay on the Big Island.
As you will find, there is much to do on the Big Island, or, what we call, the "real Hawaii.". A large portion of our guests are return "customers" who come back to the Edge year after year. Many people use the Edge of the World as a base from which to explore the rest of the Big Island. Others use it as a place to snorkel, hike, play golf, birdwatch, build sand castles, or just watch papaya grow, and that's fine too. For Kana, my Japanese wife, and me, it is a genuine pleasure to meet folks from around the U.S. and from around the world.

- Location
- Captain Cook, 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona, about a twenty to twenty-five minute drive from the Kona Airport. The elevation is perfect at 1,000 feet. Not too hot, not too cold, and almost certainly sunny. Incredible sweeping coastline and bay views. Five minutes drive to fine restaurants, ten minutes to some of the finest ocean activities imaginable.
DIRECTIONS
Here are the directions for getting here from the Kona airport. I suggest not using GPS or Google Maps --
The Edge of the World is about 19 miles from Keohole (Kona) airport.
Turn right on Rte. 19, which becomes Rte. 11 after Kailua-Kona town. You'll pass the Manago Hotel (between 110 and 109 mile markers) on your right as you enter the small town of Capt. Cook. On your left you'll pass the fire station, post office, and Kealakekua Ranch Center. Two streets past the Kona Theater, (the first street is Anoi Place) maybe half a mile, you will make a right turn. (This turn is about 200 yeards BEFORE the 109 mile marker.) At that intersection you will see a one foot by six foot wooden sign saying "McCoy Plantation." Turn right there and remain on that road for the next two tenths of a mile (Don't drive down Coffee Drive.)(Please drive slowly from here to the Edge, as roads are narrow and visability poor.) After two tenths you will see a small one foot by two foot sign with the number 82-5899, a two foot square sign that says "Hale Mauka" (not us but a good turning landmark), and a white circle about two feet in diameter painted on the road. Turn right there (it looks kind of like a driveway) and proceed down a narrow, lush (almost jungle-like, without elephants and tigers) road for two tenths of a mile. You will pass two houses on your right, just keep going straight ahead, down a hill, up a hill and out of the lushness with coffee plants on your left and a small pasture on your right. When the pasture (and a low stone wall) end, you will turn right down the first cement driveway. You'll also see a six foot long white arrow painted in the road, and a small sign that says "Edge". It's a long driveway of about 400 feet, Don't stop at the first house on the right, or the second on the left which has a large green roof, just keep going until you come to The Edge of the World, where you'll see a very small sign. You'll see a modern looking two story structure, upper floor is redwood with blue roof, and the lower level is beige stucco. The Manago Hotel, the Capt. Cook Post Office, and the Kealakekua Ranch Center are a mere five minute drive away. Our local phone number is (808) 328-7424. (Please remember to copy and bring these directions.)
Directions from the South
From the south, you'll be seeing mile markers indicationd the distance from Hilo on the side of the road. Approximately 100 yards after the 109 mile marker turn left (this is the first left after the 109 mm and also where you will find the McCoy Plantation sign). The rest is the same as from the north.
- Rooms/Suites
- The Crow's Nest is on the second floor of the house and has a spectacular view of Kealakekua Bay and the Pacific Ocean. It has a private lanai, individual satellite TV, DVD, phone, private bath, refrigerator, wall to wall carpet, and king size bed. It is our most popular room and a favorite of honeymooners, artists and poets. It is $139 plus tax per night. This room may have the best view in Hawaii!
The Pacific Room, on the main floor of the house, is a spacious bedroom with a huge private bathroom, king size bed, individual satellite TV, VCR and DVD, wall to wall carpet, refrigerator, phone and opens on the long lanai which wraps around the back of the house looking out to the ocean. There is a semi-private area on the lanai for guests staying in the Pacific room. There is also a nice ocean view from the bedroom. This room is $129 plus tax per night.
The Nut Room is slightly smaller than the other two rooms but still quite large, new wall to wall carpet, has one double bed and one twin bed, no TV or phone (however guests are welcome to use the ones in the living room). The private bathroom is two steps down the hallway. It overlooks the orchard and has a wonderful skylight, and is $99 plus tax per night. We have a table with a great ocean view set up on the lanai for guests who stay in the Nut Room.

- Single Occupancy - $94-$134 plus tax per night
Double Occupancy - $99-$139 plus tax per night
Additional occupant: $15 per person per night
Off season discount for long term stay.
- Breakfast
- Savory traditional, vegan, Japanese and Hawaiian breakfasts served with the farm's coffee and fruits. Special breakfasts prepared on request. You will also be served organic tropical fruits grown right here on the plantation. When in season you may try our mango, papaya, banana, pineapple, sapote, sour sop, star fruit, fig, lychee, atamoya, cheramoya, guava, dragonfruit, and passionfruit. A fruitlover's paradise. The fruits will be complemented with omlette, french toast, pancakes, scrambled eggs, etc. on a rotational basis. You may also enjoy our very own Kona coffee.
- Facilities
- It's a ten minute drive to what Kona is all about -- some of the world's greatest snorkeling, ancient archeological sites and ethnobotanical garden. Not a long drive to great golfing, sailing, diving and kayaking. Bird watch from your lanai! Satellite TV and DVD's are available for our guests.

This is the real Hawaii! Our children visited on the lanai and cracked fresh macadamia nuts. In the morning we drank rich Kona coffee, from the local landscape and delighted in sharing adventures and insiders knowledge over a perfect breakfast. Easy location to beaches, restaraunts, and sunny Kona weather. Kurt's family home surpasses any destination hotel or resort. We longed for it after moving on to other parts of the island. 5 stars.,
Wish I would plannedhave stayed longer at The Edge.
